The wondrous world of stories!
At times, we as adults fail to nurture our children’s quest for imagination and curiosity. With two minutes of your time, I will highlight how you can use the magic of stories to support your child in imbibing values and a desired skill set.
Reading transforms your child's world and enables their subconscious to absorb the hidden values and messages of a book. A popular example from my childhood is the "sher aaya, sher aaya" story. We don’t approach this by forcing “ideal values” into them, but rather try to hit their imaginative world with something they can truly relate to. Educating them about something through a beautifully crafted story has a very different impact.
The tiger has come, the tiger has come, the child shouted for the 6th time, all the villagers are scared but what if the child runs to her sister and tells her, "I'm scared to go to school, there are people troubling me".
The core idea that we believe in is that children live in a world of metaphors and often use creative sentences to express themselves as they find it hard to convey their thoughts in adult language construction.
Panchtantra books are not just stories, they are actually means to reach out to your child without forcing them to come to you.
Tales of the jungle imbibe the values of unity, togetherness, and calling for help.
Sudha Murthy's stories for children will make your little ones respect their heritage, seek fun in visiting their grandparents and appreciate everything rural.
We do NOT have to give them big books or expect them to be able to understand The Mahabharata or The Ramayana. We have to start small, the idea is to have them fall in love with the story, to make them their own protagonist, and imbibe in them the fighting spirit of never giving up.
Start by giving them a "tinkle," let them laugh with Shikari Shambhu, and lay the path forward thereon. Today’s “Genz” children do not like to be forced to do an activity. As parents to this new generation, we need to make some amendments to foster better learning for our children.
Don’t forget the order, from falling in love with stories to eventually jumping on to Geronimo Stilton and wherever their desires take them from there.
The story will always come to their rescue…
